5 Steps to Creating Your Own Spiritual Practice

Creating your own spiritual practice is an essential part of finding your purpose and defining your values. 🦋 Basically, it’s the key to stop feeling so lost. Before we talk about how to create a spiritual practice of your own, we need to first define what a spiritual practice is and is not.

What a Spiritual Practice is and is Not

A spiritual practice is anything that helps you reconnect with your soul.

A belief in one’s soul is needed and it’s helpful to believe this is some power greater than one’s self.

It does not require a religious belief and at the same time fits into any existing religious beliefs. 🕊️

It also does not require any “woo woo,” metaphysical, or “New Age” knowledge. For some, these types of things can be helpful, and if you’re meant to branch out into them, that will happen with time and connection to your soul.

It could look like:

  • Hiking 🚶🏻‍♀️

  • Running 🏃🏻‍♀️

  • Meditation/Yoga 🧘

  • Writing/Journaling 🖊️

  • Drawing/Other Creative Outlets 🎨

  • Prayer/Ritual/Ceremony 🙏

  • Singing 🧑‍🎤

  • Sitting in Nature 🌳

  • Anything else that bring you inner peace 🙂

A spiritual practice is NOT filled with dogma. It does not preach a specific system of beliefs and does not require an institution, organization, building, or other people in order to practice it.

Though you may wish to include others or find spiritual nourishment in church/synagogue/mosque/etc, those are not requirements. They’re also perfectly okay if they work for you. :

How to Create Your Own Spiritual Practice

Whether you’re actively involved in a religion or not, you can begin the process of creating your own spiritual practice with these simple steps.

1 Think about What Brings You Joy 😀

It may happen a lot or it may be a rare occurrence. Either way, there are moments in your life that bring you joy. Think about those and make a list. To help jump start your thought process, here are a couple of examples:

  • I feel joy when I’m crafting 🖍️

  • I feel joy when I’m hiking 🥾

  • I feel joy when I’m singing 🧑🏻‍🎤

When you’ve got a list of 3 - 5 moments when you feel joy, you’re ready for step two!

2 Dive Deeper

What is it about each of those moments that brings you joy? Creation? Empowerment/a sense of your personal power? Fun? Something else?

Write down as many reasons as necessary for each item on your list. Some may have one, some may have quite a lot.

3 Decision Time

Of all those reasons you just wrote down in step 2, which one(s) do you want to have more of in your life right now?

Maybe you’re wanting to feel more personal power and empowerment in your life. Great! Which item(s) make you feel that way? When you have that, you’re well on your way to creating your own spiritual practice. 🎉

4 Add to It

Now that you know what feeling you want to have more of and at least one thing you already do that helps you feel that way, add to it.

What other things could you do that might help bring more of that feeling into your life? It’s okay to try things and decide they’re not for you. It’s all part of exploring, learning, growing, and becoming your True Self. 💖

5 Make It a Habit

You’ve now got at least one (and hopefully more) things you can do to help you reconnect to your soul. Yay!

Time to do them. The more frequently you do, the more quickly you’ll start to feel like you’re finding your way - defining your values, finding your purpose, and becoming the person you were meant to be. 🤩
