50 Ways to Save the Planet That Will Help You Find Your Purpose

An important part of finding your purpose is exploring different activities and ideas. Doing this helps you define your values, connect with others, and discover your passions ❤️‍🔥 - all of which play key roles in uncovering your life purpose.

These 50 ways to save the planet 🌎 will also help you explore and find your purpose through connection with Nature. I’ve put them into handy categories for you! Try to do at least one from each category and build, change, combine, hone in from there. You definitely do not need to do all 50!

No one can do everything, but everyone can do something, and it all adds up!

Lifestyle

“Personal responsibility is not only recognizing the errors of our ways. Personal responsibility lies in our willingness and ability to correct those errors individually and collectively.”

Yehuda Berg

  1. Reduce your energy consumption. This can be done by turning off lights when you leave a room, using LED light bulbs 💡, and weatherizing your home to make it more energy-efficient.

  2. Drive less. If you can, walk, bike, or take public transportation instead of driving. If you do have to drive, carpool or take advantage of ride-sharing services. It’s often cheaper than buying gas, too!

  3. Go vegan. Meat production is a major contributor to climate change. By eating less meat, you can help to reduce your impact on the environment.

  4. Recycle and compost. Recycling and composting help to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills.

  5. Start a worm bin. 🪱 Worm bins are a great way to compost food scraps and yard waste. Worms break down organic matter and turn it into nutrient-rich compost that can be used to fertilize plants.

  6. Use less water. This can be done by taking shorter showers 🚿, fixing any leaks in your home, turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth, and watering your lawn less often (or just get rid of your lawn - see number 12).

  7. Buy local and sustainable products. When you buy local and sustainable products, you're supporting businesses that are committed to protecting the environment as well as supporting your community.

  8. Avoid single-use plastics. This includes things like plastic bags, straws, and water bottles. Plastics cannot truly be recycled. Far too much winds up in the oceans, damaging critical habitats.

  9. Choose sustainable fashion. When you buy clothes, look for items that are made from sustainable materials and produced in an ethical way. The Fair Trade Certification is one way to do this.

  10. Reduce your food waste. Food waste is a major contributor to climate change. By reducing the amount of food we waste, we can help to protect the environment.

  11. Adopt a pet from a shelter. Adopting a pet from a shelter is a great way to reduce your environmental impact. When you adopt a pet, you're giving them a loving home and preventing them from being euthanized, so it’s also a more compassionate choice. 🐈 🐕

  12. Plant natives instead of lawns.

  13. Bring your own reusable bags when you go shopping.

  14. Use natural pest control methods.

  15. Be a role model. By making changes in your own life, you can inspire others to do the same.

Community Involvement

arms linked behind backs

“In every community, there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart, there is the power to do it.”

Marianne Williamson

  1. Volunteer. You can volunteer for a local environmental organization, school, or other organization that helps protect the planet.

  2. Get involved in politics. Vote for candidates who support environmental protection or run for office yourself.

  3. Write to your elected officials about environmental issues that are important to you. This is a great way to make your voice heard and to influence policy decisions.  ✍️

  4. Write letters to the editor. This is often an effective way to share your opinions with your community and raise awareness.

  5. Support environmental education. Teach your children about the importance of protecting the planet. Volunteer at your local environmental education center or a school.

  6. Start a community garden. This is a great way to get to know your neighbors and to grow your own food.

  7. Host a potluck dinner. This is a great way to reduce food waste and to connect with your community.

  8. Adopt a highway or park area. Adopting a section of road or public park usually means you (and a group you put together) are responsible for keeping that space clean and free of litter. It’s a great way to contribute to your community while helping to save the planet.

  9. Become a citizen scientist. Citizen scientists are people who contribute to scientific research without having a formal scientific background. There are many ways to become a citizen scientist such as participating in bird counts, water quality testing, and wildlife surveys.

Vote with Your Dollar 💲

“Every time you spend money, you're casting a vote for the kind of world you want.”

  12. Invest in sustainable products and services. This is a great way to support the development of new technologies and practices that can help to protect the environment.

  13. Start a business that helps to solve an environmental problem. For example, you could start a company that recycles plastic, develops renewable energy sources, or creates sustainable clothing.

  14. Invent a new product or technology that helps to protect the environment. For example, you could invent a more efficient solar panel, a biodegradable plastic, or a way to clean up oil spills

  15. Adopt a tree. Trees provide many benefits to the environment, such as absorbing carbon dioxide, providing shade, and improving air quality. When you adopt a tree, you are helping to ensure that it will continue to provide these benefits for years to come. 🌳

  16. Adopt wildlife. Making a donation to symbolically adopt wildlife helps protect them and their habitat.

Expand Your Knowledge

“Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.”

Socrates

  1. Educate yourself and others. The more you know about the environment, the more you can do to help protect it. Share what you learn with your friends, family, and community.

  2. Learn about regenerative agriculture. This  is a farming method that focuses on improving the health of the soil and the environment. This can be done by using cover crops, crop rotation, and other methods that help to build soil organic matter and improve water infiltration. Basically, it’s how it was done before big ag became a thing.

  3. Learn about vertical farming. This is a method of growing crops in vertically stacked layers. This can be done indoors or outdoors using much less land and water than other farming methods.

  4. Learn about a circular economy. This is an economic model that aims to eliminate waste and pollution.

  5. Learn about permaculture. Permaculture is a system of design that mimics the patterns found in nature. It can be used to create sustainable and self-sufficient communities.

Get Creative

“There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns.”

Edward De Bono
